Ferreira Gullar in conversation with/en conversación con Ariel Jiménez, the fifth book in the Conversaciones/Conversations series, presents a vivid portrait of Ferreira Gullar, an art critic, political essayist, playwright and poet who has been a key and controversial figure in the Brazilian cultural scene for the past 60 years and includes an introductory essay by Weydson Leal.

Ferreira Gullar was born in 1930 in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. His poetic production has been closely intertwined with his work as an art critic. From his first major collection of poems, published in 1954, to his Concrete and Neoconcrete work, published from 1957 to 1959 (and including the important 1959 works 'Neoconcrete Manifesto' and 'Theory of the Non-Object'), Gullar’s writings are essential to the history of Brazilian and Latin American literature, deeply influencing generations of artists.

The e-book edition includes videos of Gullar reading excerpts of his poems in his studio in Copacabana; a reproduction of his 'Neoconcrete Manifesto' as it was first published in 1959; and a previously unpublished anthology of Gullar’s poems translated into English by Leland Guyer, 'An Ordinary Man', which includes a full translation of the epic poem 'Poema sujo.' The e-book version of this anthology is also available for purchase in a separate digital edition.

Ariel Jiménez was the Curator (1998–2000) and Chief Curator (2000–2011) of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, and Director (2004–2006) and Curator (2006–2011) of the Fundación de Arte Moderno Jesús Soto in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela. He has researched and written extensively about modern and contemporary art in Latin America.

Weydson Barros Leal is a poet and art critic based in Rio de Janeiro. He is a contributing author for magazines including the Ministry of Culture, Fundação Biblioteca Nacional’s Poesia Sempre. Barros Leal is a member of the Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Arte [Brazilian Association of ArtCritics].

Leland Guyer specializes in 20th century Portuguese and Brazilian literature. In 1990, he published the first full-length translation of Ferreira Gullar's 'Poema Sujo' [Dirty Poem], generally regarded to be one of the most important works of poetry to have been written in Latin America in this century and has since been working on the Gullar anthology An Ordinary Man. Guyer is Professor of Hispanic Studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, where he has been teaching since 1983.
